A centuries-old landmark, the iconic grade II listed Simmons Monument stands at the summit of Dane John Mound (which dates back to 1st century AD) in Dane John Gardens. Erected in 1803, the monument honours Alderman James Simmons, founder of the Kentish Gazette, who purchased and landscaped the gardens in 1790 as a gift to the city.
