Background

The historic city of Canterbury, located in Kent, England has a fascinating history that dates back to Roman times. Home to three UNESCO World Heritage sites it is known for its rich cultural heritage, stunning medieval architecture and its significance as a religious and educational center.

Most famous for its iconic 6th century Cathedral, an exquisite example of Gothic architecture and one of the most significant religious landmarks in England, Canterbury is also home to St. Augustine’s Abbey (originally a burial place for Anglo-Saxon Kings), St. Martin’s Church (the oldest church in the English speaking world) and was the inspiration for ‘The Canterbury Tales’ by Geoffrey Chaucer (a collection of stories that vividly portray 14th century medieval society and considered one of the greatest works of English literature).

The modern city today is a delightful maze of narrow medieval streets, timber-framed buildings and charming shops, cafés and restaurants. A vibrant student population contributes to the city’s lively cultural scene, with theatres, art galleries, music venues and festivals.

Canterbury Black and White photography is exclusively created by local photographer and graphic designer Lucy Ryan who has lived in the city since 2016. Her collection of images aims to capture the essence of Canterbury which is a blended mix of rich historical heritage in a modern, contemporary world.
